In the United States about 25 million, or 1 in 13 people, have asthma, including six million children under age 18. Approximately 1.8 million people had an asthma-related emergency department visit in 2021, and 189,000 people were hospitalized. As Respiratory Care Practitioners, we are in an ideal position to treat this patient population, so it is important that we understand the various aspects of asthma. This course has been put together for just such a purpose. During this course, you will get a general overview of asthma, review the classic signs and symptoms, review tools that can predict length of stay, and look at the usefulness of a high flow nasal cannula as well as a protocol from a pediatric perspective.
